American Football, brilliant sport isn’t it? Not exactly easy to get involved with in the UK though with a limited number of teams dotted around the country. Alas, there is good news! The sport of American Football is growing in the UK, not only with coverage of the Superbowl and regular season NFL or the fact that we are lucky enough to have a regular season game played at Wembley each season, but there are more teams sprouting up around the country each and every year.

So, if you are based in South Cumbria and fancy kitting up and chasing a pig skin, or just fancy putting some hits on people (not fists!) then check out Walney Terriers or follow them on Twitter @WalneyTerriers. The Terriers train every Sunday at 1:30PM at Walney School, details can be found on by clicking the Walney Terriers link <—- back there somewhere!

It really is a great sport and you won’t regret getting involved. Come on down, get yourself on the gridiron! Even if you are a complete rookie with no knowledge of the game it’s not a problem, everyone has to start somewhere, that’s why we have a team of coaches.

See you all soon I hope.

Down, set, HUT HUT!

As any other software developer has, over the years I have written many small bits of software for the purpose of testing various bits of code and ideas, some good, others not so good, but we won’t go there…. Anyway, the reason for this post is that I have just been browsing through one of my external storage drives which is full to the brim of a whole host of random things, and some of what I found is a collection of software and applications that I developed many moons ago, just sitting there going to waste.

So, you lucky fellows, I am going to have a sort through of what I have got and put them all online here. Some are plugins for AutoCAD which as far as I recall were also tested on AutoCAD Architecture and should be compatible with anything from AutoCAD 2007(give or take) onwards, although I make no promises of this. Other bits of software are standalone Windows applications that do a range of things, some music players, some text encoders, the usual sort. There are one or 2 quite exciting things but I’ll discuss them when it comes to it.

I make no promises that any of the stuff works 100%, but if you want to give it a try then feel free, there will be a series of posts coming up after this one with details of each application and a download link.

Ta ta for now.

The internet is a funny thing, always growing, something is always happening, always changing….. or is it?

It is undeniable that the internet is on a constant state of flux, never standing still for a minute, but how much is it really changing? Evolving, yes, that is undeniable, but really changing, I’m not so sure. What was the last big change? Twitter? Nope, that we essentially an evolution of blogging and facebook. Facebook? Nope, may as well be called Myspace+. Google? Hello Mr Yahoo. Instant Messaging? Skype? Anything? Answers on a postcard please.

There have been no big changes for a long time, even the hardware we use is still the same. Ok, so we are gradually moving towards smartphones, tablets, touchscreen PCs, etc, but the majority of people still access the internet more often than not through a laptop or desktop, using their keyboard and their mouse. A mouse? What the hell are we doing still using a mouse? The mouse is so old even its grandchildren are eligible for a free bus pass!

Well, it’s a good job we are moving towards touchscreen technology then, isn’t it. Is it? Ummmm, no. Have you seen how many people don’t wash their hands? Just what I want, sharing a computer with a work colleague or family member and for my pleasure not only do I get to paint a pretty picture in photoshop with my finger but I also get a handful of urine, mmmm yummy, that will go nicely with my lunch, thanks.

So no, touchscreen isn’t what I want. I don’t want to have to touch anything, I just want to point. Well, really I just want to think it and my computer will do it, but I have enough trouble interpreting my own thoughts so there is no chance of a computer being able to do that. So for now, pointing will suffice.

Now, I think that is just about enough babble for now drilling my point home, now to the main attraction. I have developed (a while ago now) a script that will allow you to just point at where you want to go, then will do it. Obviously for this to be possible you do require a webcam. Also for clarification purposes having a webcam sat in your drawer that has only seen the light of day twice in the last seven years isn’t what I mean, the webcam must be plugged in (unless of course it is built in) and turned on, and working!

The script is temperamental to say the least and there are issues with sensitivity, but it is a starting point. Rome wasn’t built in a day….. If you have made it this far then bravo, now pop yourself over to http://www.lece.co.uk/webcam and see just what it is that I am fussing about.

Remember, I did say it is basic, temperamental and there are issues, I am well aware of these and work is already underway on improving the concept. For now though, this script is purely that, a concept.

Have fun! Ta ta for now.

Working in the web and SEO industry I am constantly coming across various offers, promotions and sales tactics, the most recent of which was a rather interesting one.

Before we get into it let’s state a fact;
Nobody can guarantee you to be on the first page of Google (or any other search engine for that matter)

Now, many unscrupulous companies will offer this as a service, but always be careful to read the small print, and ask the right questions.

Unfortunately the companies that offer this as a service are not stupid and are very careful about their wording. The best example I can give of this is the following, “we guarantee you will be on the first page of Google for up to (insert number here) key phrases.”
Do you see it? Let’s try another. “we offer a money back guarantee if you are not on the front page of Google for up to (insert number here) key phrases.”
See it again?
Whilst you are not being lied to, the above statements are rather misleading and not exactly forthcoming with the truth, especially when you are on the end of the phone with someone giving it the hard sell.

The trick is the all important up to, 2 little words that mean oh so much. As an example let’s say you are discussing 10 key phrases that you want to be SEO’d. When someone guarantees you up to 10 key phrases on the first page of Google then you may end up with 10 on the first page (if you happen to have a rabbit’s foot in your pocket), but you may also end up with one, two or likely even none.
“But they offered me a money back guarantee so I will just get my money back” I hear you cry. Did you read the small print? If you did you will see up to in there as well…..

So all in all the moral of the story is be careful, don’t be bullied into making a rash decision without reading the small print, and if a company won’t send you a copy of their terms and conditions prior to an agreement being reached then listen out for the alarm bells!

Final point, it’s not just up to that you need to be wary of, there are a whole host of tricks so if you are ever in doubt don’t hesitate to ask for a second opinion.

Have a nice day.

So much thought has obviously gone into the first post being “Hello world!” in the WordPress blogging platform that it seems wrong to remove it completely. So, let’s stick with it, Hello World.

This, as you may have guessed is my blog, and if you hadn’t guessed my name is Leigh C. Elkins, the C. stands for Christopher, but that would be far too long to write all the time, and lets face it, a single middle initial gives off an air of nobility. Actually, on second thoughts, George W. Bush, I may have to reconsider my entire philosophy regarding middle initials….

Anyway, down to business. I am a website developer, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) specialist, CAD guru, Software Developer and all around tech geek. Aside from work, I am currently studying for a BSc in Mathematics and I am Director of Football & Marketing for Walney Terriers American Football club, as well as being the Offensive Line Coach.

Whilst I have previously flirted with the idea of publishing a blog, I have always found one excuse or another not to, well, not this time. The world wide web is full of useful information and tools that are freely available. I have myself benefited from some great information whilst learning the ropes in CAD, software development, website development and SEO, so I figured it is about time that I give back a little. As such I will be using this blog to share advice and possibly even some code from time to time, no doubt with a lot of ramblings about various things mixed in.

Until next time, Have a nice day!
